Why Autumn is My Favourite Season on the Costa del Sol
There’s something about autumn that has always felt special to me. Maybe it’s that gentle shift in the air, a change of pace, a new rhythm, when the long, hot days of summer start to soften.
Back in the UK, Autumn meant crunching through fallen leaves, the comforting smell of bonfires, and that unmistakable scent that tells you summer has quietly slipped away. It was about cosy jumpers, warm drinks, and Halloween evenings, all wrapped up in the golden glow of shorter days.
But here on the Costa del Sol, autumn has its own magic, different, yet every bit as enchanting.
After the busy summer months, the coast begins to breathe again. The crowds fade, the beaches return to their peaceful rhythm, and the towns, from Estepona to Sotogrande, feel wonderfully calm and familiar. You can find parking again (which always feels like a small victory!) and stroll through the streets at your own pace. There’s a sense of balance that returns, and I absolutely love it.
The Perfect Weather
One of the best things about autumn here is the weather. The intense heat of July and August gives way to something softer, the kind of warmth that hugs you rather than overwhelms you. The skies stay brilliantly blue, the sun still shines most days, and yet there’s a lightness to the air that feels refreshing.
It’s the perfect time to enjoy a morning walk along the promenade, coffee in hand, or to wander through Estepona’s old town without the need to seek shade every few minutes. The evenings are cooler now too, just cool enough to justify that first cosy cardigan or light jacket of the season. I know it sounds funny, but after months of sandals and summer dresses, there’s a genuine excitement in pulling on a pair of boots or wearing a scarf again. It’s Spain’s version of autumn fashion, sunny days, but with just a touch of chill in the air.
A Time for Living Locally
As the summer tourists head home, the Costa del Sol returns to its community heartbeat. Restaurants and cafés feel more local again, quieter but still full of life. You start to see familiar faces everywhere: friends, neighbours, the people you wave to on the school run or chat with at the bakery. There’s time to talk, to catch up, to share stories of the summer that’s just passed.
Markets are full of seasonal produce; chestnuts, persimmons, figs, and pomegranates, a gentle reminder that while the climate is Mediterranean, the seasons still turn. Beach clubs start to close their doors for the winter, but new energy arrives in the form of local fiestas and weekend hikes in the hills. The light in autumn here is also stunning, golden, low, and soft, perfect for capturing that glow across the sea or a dusky evening in the village.
Reflections and Renewal
For me, autumn always feels like a season of reflection, and here in Spain, that feeling is amplified by the beauty that surrounds us. It’s a time to slow down, to look ahead, and to appreciate how lucky we are to live in a place where even the cooler months are bathed in sunshine.
After 23 years of calling the Costa del Sol home, I still have moments in autumn where I stop and think, this is exactly why I moved here. The colours may be different from the falling leaves of the UK, but the feeling is the same, comfort, gratitude, and a quiet kind of joy.
So yes, autumn will always be my favourite season. Whether it’s the golden light, the peaceful pace, or simply that perfect balance between warmth and calm, it’s the season that reminds me why I fell in love with Spain in the first place.
